As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 5, of Chapter 4. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:
“So He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as He was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?’ (His Disciples had gone into town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you Living Water.'” (John 4: 5-10)
We see again and again that Jesus wasted no time or motion. There was purpose in everything He did. He went to Samaria specifically to make contact with this particular Samaritan woman. He knew what time she would come to the well for water where He would be stopping to rest. Most people would come to the well morning, and evening. This woman came at noon – probably because she wanted to avoid people who knew her reputation – which was not good – but Jesus had a Message for the Samaritans that He intended to give through her. She was surprised when The Lord spoke to her, and even asked , “How can you ask anything of me considering who I am, and who you are?” When Jesus answered, He opened a new world to her.
No one had ever spoken to her about ‘Living Water’. She had no idea what He was talking about. Our bodies need good water, and we drink it every day in some form. We must have it to quench, and satisfy the thirst of our flesh. We must have it to live a strong and healthy life. There is also a craving for ‘Living Water’ from and for our soul, and our spirit. Psalm 42 says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Isaiah 55 says, “Come, all you who are thirsty.” Psalm 36 says, “For with You is the fountain of life.” We must have this ‘Living Water’ to quench our spiritual thirst, and live a strong and healthy life in our spirit. We can never be satisfied until we have it.
In John 7, we read: “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in Me as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this He meant the Spirit whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not been glorified.” John 7:37-39
Jesus has now been glorified, and the gift of the Spirit is now given to all who believe in the Son. The Holy Spirit is the Living Water that flows within us to fill us with love, to empower us, to be our seal until the day of redemption, to intercede for us, to pray for us when we do not know how or what to pray, to fill us with wisdom, to be our Coach, our Teacher, and our Friend. Let us ask Him to fill us to the full with all that He is every day. He will. Our thirst will be totally satisfied. Father has made it so through Christ Jesus, our Lord.
