I love the short and sweet Bartimaeus story in the book of Mark.
Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, is sitting by the side of the road as Jesus and His followers are leaving Jericho. He begins to shout over and over, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Some there make an attempt to quiet Bartimaeus, but he is not heeding any of that advice, and he continues to cry out even louder. Jesus hears his cries, and He asks that the blind man be brought to Him. So the people run to the beggar and tell him, “Cheer up! Get to your feet! Jesus is calling you.” The people help him in getting to Jesus, and Jesus asks the man, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The beggar replies, “Teacher, I want to see.” Of course the telling of this story ends with “At once the man could see, and he followed Jesus on the road.”
There are so many messages in this story for all of us.
Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, couldn’t see, but he believed Jesus would heal him. He believed he could obtain mercy from Jesus. In essence, he believed Jesus was the answer. And He is! Whatever problems you may have or whatever trials you may be facing right now, I encourage you to get up and run to Jesus. (We do that through prayer in His name.) Be a Bartimaeus and tell Him what you want Him to do for you. Then trust that He is working all things in your life for your good.
So let us “Cheer up! Let us get to our feet [or on our knees]. Jesus is calling us.
