As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 43 of Chapter 4. Writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:
“After two days He left for Galilee. (Now Jesus Himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in His own country.) When He arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival for they also had been there. Once more He visited Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea he went to Him and begged Him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go”, Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.” John 4:43-54.
On His way back from Jerusalem, Jesus had spent two days in Samaria where He had so touched the lives of the Samaritans He came into contact with they proclaimed, “This man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:42)
The Romans had divided Israel into three Regions. Galilee, Samaria, and Judea. Though Jesus was rejected in His home town of Nazareth, (Luke 4: 16-30), and it was in the Region of Galilee, He spent more time in that Region than any other place. It had about 250 towns, and many synagogues, and this is where Capernaum was which is where He Headquartered. This is also where Cana was, and this is where this miracle occurred.
The Word was out that Jesus could heal, and this Dad had walked the 20 miles from Capernaum to Cana to ask Him to come heal his son when he heard that Jesus was close. Though the Lord’s response was more of a statement to the crowd, the Dad persisted. And even though he was an official over Jesus, he called him “Sir”, recognizing His authority over all things, and asked again. Jesus then said unto him, “Go. Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and headed home.
This man went to Jesus in faith. He believed that God had given Jesus the power to heal. He believed Jesus in faith, and took Him at His Word. He headed home in faith believing that his son was healed.
All of this was confirmed, and the Word says, “So he and all of his household believed.” His faith moved into his whole family because he acted upon it. May it be so for each of us. Our faith may be small and unsure as we begin to use it, but faith the size of a mustard seed can bring miracles when we use it, (Luke 17:6) and take Jesus at His word.
