Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm, and the longest chapter in the Bible. It is one of my favorites because it is replete with reminders that the Word is greatly needed by each of us. It, along with the entire theme of the Bible, reminds us that the Word is what brings light into the darkness of a fallen world.
Again, and again this psalm tells us to turn to the Word. It says unto the Lord, “Thy Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119: 11). Of course if we do not sin against the Lord, we will not sin against the people in our lives. But here is a truth; having words in our heart that would keep us from sin would give us direction to do the right things, but would not within itself give us the motivation to do what it says. Knowing what is right, and doing what is right are two different things.
Here is a greater truth: “The Word of God is alive, and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) The Good News is we are moved to do what is right by the actions of the Word itself when we put it into our heart. Here is why.
The Apostle John wrote: “The Word became flesh, and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” He said, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1,14) Jesus Christ is the Word. His Spirit is in every word of truth. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” (John 14:6) When we put the Word into our minds and hearts, we put the power and wisdom of Christ Himself into our being.
Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” God the Father is in us working to fulfill His good purpose. And that good purpose is for us to learn to accept, and love one another in Christ. When that happens we will not sin against God, or anyone else for that matter.
Let us never let a day that we are given go by without putting the Word into our being. It is a lamp for our feet. It is a light for our path. It works for us, and leads us in the right direction, and to do what is right because it is the very presence of God. The Words come alive within us as we take them in by our eye, or by our ear. If there is anything that is wrong, or misinterpreted, or wrongly translated, God will make the truth come alive within us. For these are not just words, they are the presence of God Almighty. No one or no thing can change the truth of that.
Psalm 119:16 says, “I delight in your decrees, I will not neglect your Word.” As we go to the Word each day, we will find ourselves wanting to spend more and more time in it because it is Love. We are drawn to it by its comfort. It shall become our delight. It shall light our way, and direct our steps to success for the day in every way. It will lead us to perfect health, and divine wealth through Christ Jesus as we believe in and stand on the promises made to us in it. “For all of the promises made by God are Yes in Christ Jesus.”
You are greatly Loved, God’s Beloved. Let His Word love on you through the presence of the Holy Spirit, the Father, and Christ Jesus in it.
