We continue our study of the Gospel of John. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life.’ John 8:12
As we shall see as we read on, John 8:20 tells us that Jesus was speaking these words in the treasury – the part of the temple where the offerings were put, and where candles burned to symbolize ‘the pillar of fire’ that led the people of Israel through the desert. (Exodus 13: 21,22) It was in this setting, Jesus called Himself ‘The light of the World.’ To the children in the desert, ‘The Pillar of Fire’, the Light, represented and was, God’s presence, protection, and guidance. So it is for us when we ask Jesus to come into our lives as Lord and Savior – He brings God’s presence, protection, and guidance into our lives. He is the Light that leads.
When we follow Him, we walk IN the Light – and WITH the Light. His Light within leads us to wisdom. It removes the darkness in our mind, and in our heart, and shows us the way to look at things through the lenses of Love. As we walk with Him in the world, we see more clearly. We see things that the natural mind and eye does not. We see that ‘self serving’ instead of having a ‘servant’s heart’ leads only to emptiness, and never to fulfillment. We see that doing ‘just a little’ to help can lead to something big when enough do their part. We see that kindness and compassion and love can change lives, because that is how our Lord lived life here on earth, and that is what brings people to repentance, and a heart of love, and new life.
Let us look to Him to deliver us from any darkness. Let us give Him full access to every part of our life, and walk in the Light that will come forth from within us, and around us as we do. Jesus is indeed the Light, and Life of the World. All things good come through Him as we walk with Him.
