As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 16 of Chapter 6. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle wrote:
“When evening came, His disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But He said to them, ‘It is I, don’t be afraid.’ Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” (John 6:16-21)
This miracle was done for His Disciples right behind the miracle of feeding 5 to 10 thousand people with two small fish, and five small loaves of bread to the point of overflowing.
As we explore this water walking miracle in the Gospel of Matthew, we see that “Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowd. After He had dismissed them He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. Later that night, He was there alone,…( Matthew 14: 22-23)
There several things for us to see in this event, so we will look at them separately bringing in other Gospels to show the bigger picture than John’s. A huge part of the event is not given in this scripture, and we need to look at it as well. Jesus is teaching here as He always was, and is – always showing us that He is the Way. Always wanting us to see the power He has, and the power He has given unto us, and that He is well aware of what is going on, and that He is the solution.
He sent the disciples out on the water to get the stage set for the miracle, and He used the waiting time to pray.
So it is for us. Jesus is a water walking God of miracles. He does not always set the stage, but He is always the solution. Let us pray as we wait in expectation for Him to make good things come.
