A good name. Proverbs 22

What is in a name?  It is who we are.  It speaks of what we do – of the life we live.  It is our legacy.

Proverbs 22:1 says:  “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
When the angel Gabriel went to Mary and informed her she would be the Mother of our Lord and Savior, he told her, “you are to give him the name Jesus.”  (Luke 1:31)  When an angel of the Lord went to Joseph, and explained that Mary was with child from the Holy Spirit, the angel said,” Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”(Matt. 1:20,21)
Jesus is the name selected by the Father to show the humanity of our Lord.  Son of man.  Flesh of our flesh. Blood of our blood.  It later became synonymous with the name Christ, the Anointed One, because He proved to be so.  As we read the New Testament, we see the power this name brings through the Holy Spirit when we call upon it in faith.
Every name has a meaning.  Even though sometimes given by the parent without knowing the true meaning, the Lord honors it.  Such is the case for my children.  They both have emerged perfectly named as they have proven to be who they are called.
When we come to know who we are, and come to realize how important it is that our name be synonymous with truth, and honor, and doing things the right way, we shall rise to that.  When we come to realize that “to be esteemed is better than silver or gold”, we will have put a perspective into our life that will bring peace and happiness.
To be esteemed, a word we seldom use, means to “value highly, respect, favorable opinion”.  This is the legacy that we want to leave.  This is what we want others to think of when they hear our name.
When we hear the name “Jesus”, may we remember these words: “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place, and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord , to the glory of God the Father.”  Philippians 2: 9-11
The grace of The Lord Jesus be with you, saints of the Lord.
My love to all of you in Christ Jesus.
