“Do not welcome false teaching.” 2 John 10

As we continue our study of 2 John, we pick up at verse 10.  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:  “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him.  Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.”  2 John 10,11

The teaching John speaks of here is of course what he has been speaking of in his letter.  That Jesus is the Son of God, and came in the love of the Father to bring love and truth into our hearts in the Holy Spirit through faith in Him.  Jesus taught that we are to love one another.  He taught that God is love, and that in love we are one with Him.  He taught that grace mercy and peace are ours in Him.
As John concludes his letter, he is saying to the church, this teaching is truth.  If someone comes to you and tells you something different, or if someone comes to you and disputes these facts, do not take their teaching into your home.  Do not welcome it into your midst.  He was not saying do not welcome the person.  He was with Jesus as He walked and worked with those who were right, and those who were wrong.  He saw Jesus show love to all, and to turn away none.  What John was telling them, and us, is to not welcome false teaching.  We should be open to discussing an issue, and our door should always be open to one that does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, or that faith in Him brings love into our heart.  This is how we teach God’s love.  This is how we teach truth.
We want our children to be friends with those who are walking along the right paths.  Paths that will lead them to good things in their life. That does not mean we want them to be unkind or anti-social to those who are involved in things that will hurt them, but we do want them to understand the consequences of receiving the wrong words, thoughts, and ways.  This is what our Lord wants for us as well.  Even King Solomon, one of the most wise persons that ever lived, was lured into idol worship by having people in his life, and in his home, that led him away from our Father God through false teaching.   As Paul wrote:  “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.  For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common?  Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? ” (2 Corinthians 6:14)
So show God’s love to everyone.  Be accepting of all people, but not false teaching.  Help them to see the truth, and the way, and the life if they will allow, but do not allow your home or your life to be a place for seeds of doubt or darkness to be planted.  Let us walk with Christ Jesus, yoked with Him, and He will always have us in the light that all can come to.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, God’s Beloveds.  My love to each of you in Christ Jesus.
