Jesus Gives the Beatitudes. (Part 1) Luke 6:17-26

After Jesus had selected His Twelve Disciples, Luke tells us:
“He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them ALL.” Luke 6:17-19
Looking at His disciples, and those around Him, He said:
‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.’ ‘Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.’ ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.’ ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you, and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.’
He said, ‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.’
He went on to say some things that must be heard correctly and for who they were intended – those who do not care for others in need.
‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.’ ‘Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.’ ‘Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.’ ‘Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.’ Luke 6:20-26
As the Lord delivered this message, He was asking those who were there, and those who are here now, to realize that socioeconomic status does not reflect the measure of God’s love. He delivered this message at a time, not unlike today, where prosperity was seen as a sign of God’s favor. He was likely simultaneously assuring his new followers who had given up everything to follow him that their reward waited. His initial words were meant to bless the downtrodden and he followed that with an admonishment to not assume wealth and problem free lives equal salvation… which is found in the inner walk with Him.
Please pray for the ongoing wars and pray for our country. May our hearts and minds be filled with wisdom and compassion for one another and may God keep His hand on us.🙏
Love to each of you. I pray that you and yours have had a wonderful July 4th celebration.🎉❤️ May the truth of it continue daily.
