Jesus said, “…He will give you another advocate to help you… – The Spirit of Truth.” John 14:16-17

As we continue to absorb the wonderful truth of John 14, we pick up at verse 15 of that chapter today. Jesus was soon to leave his disciples, but also said He would remain with them. How could this be? Our Christ takes us to a whole new level of love as He introduces the Holy Spirit in a way we can grasp and receive into our hearts. He said:

“If you love Me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you, and be with you forever – The Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him, nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans: I will come to you.”

During His embodiment as a man, Jesus could only cover so much ground doing so much work in so many places over the course of His short life. But Jesus’ Spirit could be everywhere. Spirit was the promised advocate. The word “advocate” is translated as combining the ideas of comfort and counsel. The word could also be translated as Comforter or Encourager. Like God, Spirit’s capabilities are incomprensible. The regenerating power of the Spirit came on the disciples just before Jesus’ ascension. After the ascension, the Spirit was poured out on all believers at Pentecost, and He’s been lighting the way for us, the regenerate, ever since.

The Holy Spirit is a powerful force on our side, working for and with us. He lives with us and, literally, in us. When something rings undeniably true within us, that’s Him affirming and teaching us. It’s Spirit that reminds us of Jesus’ beautiful guiding words. He convicts us when we’re wrong and points us to God’s righteousness and mercy. He guides us into truth, bestows our various talents and gifts, and gives insight into future events. He brings glory to Christ by helping us develop into all God meant us to be. He is “the push” we feel inside us. We’re told He will be with us forever.

We’re also told the world at large cannot accept Him. Unbelievers and those simply wary of the idea of God are unaware of Spirit’s activities, but to those who hear Christ’s words and understand the Spirit’s power, He gives a whole new way to look at life… a remarkable paradigm shift I hope to explore soon. If you don’t understand the purpose of Spirit, I would encourage you to pray for understanding. We have been promised that when we seek God earnestly, we will find Him. Spirit coming to dwell within us is a crucial part of that process.

When Jesus said, “I will come to you,” as in everything He said, He meant it. To have the Holy Spirit is to have Jesus Himself. A life changing beautiful truth. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Our hearts continue to go out to those in the Ukrainian war being pushed upon them by the Russians.  A new development – Zelensky says, “EU leaders have made a decision to grant Ukraine EU candidate status.” Wonderful. The Lord is with them. Please keep Ukraine and the millions of people who have had to leave their motherland in your prayers.

Love to you all.💚🙏
