Make every effort to add to your faith. 2 Peter 1: 5

We continue our walk together with the Lord Jesus through 2 Peter.  Picking up at verse 5 of chapter One, we read the words given to Peter by the Holy Spirit as he writes:

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self -control ; and to self control, perseverance; and to perseverance godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For if you possess these qualities, in increasing measure , they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is near-sighted and blind and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.”  2 Peter 1: 5-9
“The very reason” Peter speaks about here is the divine power given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ as he so stated in verse 3.  Hebrews 12: 2a says to us, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”   The Father’s love for us is so great that He sent His Son to give us the faith to be saved, and made Him the object of that faith. He is the author and perfecter of it.  This was before the cross, and after the cross.  Faith is what Enoch had to the point God took him to heaven before he died. Faith is what the Prophets of old had as the Holy Spirit showed them what was to come. Faith is what Abraham had as he left his country to go to a promised land. A place he had never seen.  Faith is what David had;  and the list goes on as to all that was done in faith before the Cross.  They all believed the promise of God that He was sending a Savior to bring them home to Him.  God gave them divine power, and He gave them faith in which to grow. So it was – so it is today after the cross.  “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for. It is the evidence of things not seen.”
The Lord Jesus offers us in exchange for our sins, and sickness, and sorrows, and transgressions, and wickedness, His divine power, and divine faith when we believe in Him as Savior and Lord.  He cleanses us of these things because He took them upon Himself at the cross.  He gave us a perfect faith to believe and accept this truth.  Therefore, our faith is perfect.  The Word says He is also our ‘perfecter’.  So as He perfects us – that is as the Holy Spirit takes us through sanctification – He wants to fill us with goodness, and knowledge of Him, and The Father, and The Holy Spirit which gives us more and deeper love for our great God in three persons. He teaches us to look to Him for self-control, and perseverance.  He teaches us to stand in faith and display godly living, through kindness and love toward each other and ourselves.
Peter goes on to say, that if we possess these qualities, and they continue to increase in measure, that we will be effective and productive.  He said if we do not possess them, that is if we do not live in victory in them and let the world see them in us; we have lost sight of what Christ has done for us, and we have forgotten that we have been cleansed of our past sins.  He says we will become ineffective, and unproductive.  That does not mean we will have lost our salvation if we are not growing and displaying these qualities, for salvation is given by God and not earned. It is kept by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption. .  It simply says we are not effective witnesses because we are living like everyone else in the world and not receiving all that is ours in Christ Jesus.
We have a perfect faith, because it too is a gift of God, and not earned.  He gave it to us already perfect.  No amount of work will make it any better.  When we accept Christ Jesus as Lord, we are righteous in Him, and that is how the Father sees us in our spirit. Our spirit is Perfect.  Our ticket has been punched.  We are heaven bound. Even when we allow the flesh to make us do something foolish, we are God’s Kid.  If we do get off track, and get in the flesh for a bit, He may do a little teaching and disciplining because He loves us, and wants us to walk in the Spirit and experience all that is ours in Him.  But, nevertheless, He will pick us up, and brush us off, and get us back on track if we will listen. ( I have had to go through some of those sessions a few times.)
He said go and make Disciples.  That is our Mission.  That is what He has asked us to do until He returns.  Therefore, let us allow the Lord Jesus to ‘add to our faith’  the qualities that show mankind what a disciple of Christ Jesus, a new creation of God, looks like.  May that person be the image of Christ’s love.
The Lord Jesus said, “Peace be with you!  As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you.”  John 20:21
May the peace of  the Lord be upon each of us, as we go forth.  Let us be encouraged, and strengthened, and comforted by the Word.
You are greatly blessed, highly favored, and deeply loved, God’s Beloveds.
I love you.
