Meet The Holy Spirit – a Divine “person” of the Trinity

Today begins the promised study of the Holy Spirit. Our Heavenly Father and Messiah Jesus take center stage within the story of our faith but the Holy Spirit is not discussed nearly as much as He should –  though He is the means by which so much of Life is brought into existence…

The Holy Spirit is the Third “Person” in the Holy Trinity. He is personified throughout old and new covenant scripture with descriptions that depict him as our Friend, Lord, Counselor, Truth Teller, Bearer of Gifts, Bringer of Dreams, Inspiration for Prophecy, and God’s unparalleled Love within us.

He is discussed and shown in the Old Testament, from the beginning, as He makes special appearances doing special things. He was there for the creation of our world, gave extraordinary power to certain Old Testament figures and inspired the prophets to speak God’s words to those that needed to hear it. He was the force through which the way was primed for the coming saviour, Jesus.

In the Book of Joel, the promise of the coming ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit is made beautifully and seems to mark a significant turning point for mankind with these words:

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on All people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your old men will dream dreams,

your young men will see visions.

On those who believe, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

                                                                                  (Joel 2: 28-29)

As the New Testament message unfolds, The Holy Spirit is promised to all who believe in the Lord and ask Christ to come into their heart and lives. He is the game changer. The life alterer. The soul shaker.

Let us examine some of the points the Lord teaches about Him. The revelation concerning Spirit’s purpose is progressive:

a.  In the O.T., He comes upon whom God sends Him –  apparently not conditional upon the person themself but in order to fulfill events as God has destined them.

b.  Then during His life on earth Christ taught His disciples that they might receive the Spirit through prayer to the Father.  As we see in Luke 11:13, Jesus said, “If you then, though you are not what you should be, but know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

c.  And at the close of His ministry Jesus promised that He would Himself pray to the Father, and that in answer to His prayer a “Comforter” would come to stay with them. As we see in John 14:16-17, Jesus said: “And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever- the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him for He lives with you, and will be in you.”

There will be a lot to unpack in the spaces in between this outline for study in the weeks to come. He lives with us, in us, and helps us to be what we need and want to be. Let us attempt to really get to know Him and learn to walk with Him moment by moment. He is our beautiful Friend of Love.

Please continue to pray for our Brothers and Sisters in Ukraine. This is beyond understanding, but our God is with those who call unto Him.

Blessings and Love upon each of you. May good things come upon you and yours in every way every day. 💚
