“On” as used in the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Lord Jesus Christ, to the Father, and to those who Believe. (Matthew 3:16)

The New Testament indicates a threefold personal relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Believer. We see this relationship In these three words – ‘with’, ‘in,’ and ‘on’. “On” is today’s focus.

The Word gives this glorious message in relation to Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist:

As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment Heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting ‘on’ Him. And a voice from Heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased’. Matthew 3:16-17

We hear the voice of God the Father, as the Heavens opened, claiming great favor ‘on’ His Beloved Son. We see the Holy Spirit “descending like a dove” and lighting ‘on’ the man God just proclaimed as His child. I believe, as we see Jesus come out of the water of the Jordan, standing beside John the Baptist, this is where the role of Messiah was put ‘on’ Him. The Trinity was clearly revealed at that moment to all who believe.

The role of the Holy Spirit, as it landed ‘on’ Jesus, was to touch, teach, and train, through Jesus, those who would ultimately become believers. Father allowed John the Baptist to come home shortly thereafter. His work on Earth was done and our Father God, through Spirit, was present in each of them – as he is for us. Constantly.

Then we see in Acts: “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came ‘on’ all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even ‘on’ the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.” Acts 10:44-46

Spirit fell ‘on’ Believers of all stripes in that moment. Their gifts and life assignments were ordained right then as God poured his own Divine Spirit

‘on’ them. So it is for each of us who believe.

To summarize the last three weeks:

‘With’ indicates the approach of our Heavenly Father to the soul, Who presents Christ to be the object of faith – our Savior.

‘In’ describes the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in the Christian’s body to give victory over the flesh.

‘On’ is the anointing of the Holy Spirit on us, Believers, as we begin our earthly ministries as representatives of God who is LOVE.

We’ll continue studying Spirit next week. Meanwhile, let us pray for the catastrophic war emerging in the Holy Lands – for all the innocents murdered,  brutalized, and taken prisoner in Israel, for the innocents in Gaza who will suffer for the atrocities carried out at the hands of extremists, for Ukraine, and for all the places that need our prayers. Let us help where and how we can. Our precious God’s love, blessings, and help upon each of them, and each of you, in Jesus name. 🙏
