Resist the Devil by standing firm in your faith. 1 Peter 5: 9

We continue our walk through 1 Peter.  We are in Chapter 5.  We pick up at verse 8.  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter writes:

“Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of experience.”
1 Peter 5: 8-9
The devil prowls around like a roaring lion trying to frighten those who believe in Christ.  If he can get us focused on a sickness, or a loss of something, or things not going well at work, or things not going well at home, he can frighten us and devour our faith. He cannot take our salvation, but he can take away our joy of having it – if we let him – through distractions of the world.
Peter said, “Be alert, and of sober mind.”  We are not to dwell on what the enemy can do, but we should be aware of it.  We have to remember we are ‘in’ this world. He runs it for those who will follow him.  Most of them totally unaware. The Good News tells us we are not of this world because we have been born again into the kingdom of God in our spirit and are of Him.  We know “He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4), but if we are not ‘alert’ to the fact that we are focusing on the outside world instead of the kingdom within, we can be easy prey.
If we get caught up in some ‘stinking thinking’, because we let him steal (devour) our peace, and our joy, we need to take charge and shut him down.  The Word says, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”  We have to realize what is happening, and get our eyes on the One who is our peace, and who is our joy, and who is the One who loves us, and provides for us, and comforts us, and strengthens us, and encourages us.  We must stand firm in the faith in the One who saved us from the pit of darkness, and defeated the devil.
We must stand firm in the faith and realize this is not just happening to us. We have not been singled out.  Peter says every believer goes through these things.  However, we will win the battle every time when we follow the wisdom of the Word.
James, half brother of Jesus said in his Epistle, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God, and He will come near to you.” James 4: 7-8
Clearly if we come near to God, the enemy who has been defeated by the blood of Jesus, and the testimony of our words of faith, will not just leave us alone but will flee from us.  Therefore, we should stay near to the Lord by getting into His Word every day.  His word is alive, and will speak to us, and encourage us, and strengthen us, and comfort us. We should stay close through prayer, and expectation – praying in the spirit at all times.  We should stay as one with Him by never forgetting that we are children of God and posses the power that goes with that fact. We should stay close by thanking the Lord for His great provision, and for fulfilling His promises written in the Word.  By having a great body of believers to Fellowship in.  By giving of ourselves, and thinking of others versus thinking of ourselves.
Yes, there is a spiritual battle, my Friends – it is part of the journey.  But when we give it to Him, the battle is the Lord’s.  (1 Samuel 17:47)  He fights for us when we put our faith in Christ Jesus, and He brings victory to us.  We can count on it.
So says the Word.  So it is.
May the Lord bless you, and keep you, my Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus.
I love you.
