The Holy Spirit’s Relationship to the Body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12

Continuing our study of the Holy Spirit… In 1 Corinthians 12:1 the Apostle Paul says, “Now about spiritual gifts my friends, I do not want you to be uninformed.”

1 Corinthians is a letter designed to assist readers in restoration of themselves by viewing life through a spiritual lens. Paul addresses Spiritual Gifts and their uses as we hold down our individual sacred parts within “the body of Christ” – our role in existence, in God, if you will. Spirit’s relationship to the body of Christ is to ignite the truth of who we are within us and nudge us to contribute to life… right from the spot we are anchoring.

The Greek word: pneumatikos refers to things pertaining to the Spirit. It’s the antithesis of pursuing life as slaves to the human body. The Apostle uses the natural human body as metaphor to explain how the Lord has brought us together – to serve individually and as one. This relationship is twofold:

1. Spirit forms “the body” by uniting believers to Christ (remember last week w found it is Spirit that impresses faith in Christ on our hearts). Jesus is the risen and glorified Head. Then in verses 12-13, we’re told, “The body is a unit… and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body  –  whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.”

2.  To each person who receives Christ Jesus as Lord, they, each person, is given a spiritual enablement and capacity for specific service. None is destitute of such a gift, the Spirit distributes the gifts in free sovereignty. He decides as part of Grand Design. We can trust those higher callings that beckon us. Then Christian service is simply the ministry of bringing forward such a gift, or gifts, as the individual may have received. Our gifts are diverse, but equally honorable because they are bestowed by the same Spirit, administered under the same Lord, and, energized by the same God. Utilizing our gifts is surely among the greatest ways that we can honor our Creator and contribute to the evolution of our species. This is “service” of the highest order.

Much like the organs of a physical body work together to make it healthy, the necessity and blending of our gifts create the same harmony within the whole spiritual body of Christ. It’s easy to feel insignificant when other’s gifts appear greater than our own but, it all matters!

May we master the “gifts” we are given and may we seek to use them for us and those in our lives… as they are intended. Each of us who have received Christ Jesus as Lord has received a gift of service. And if you aren’t sure what your gifts are yet, well, just keep being the one and only YOU! Spirit will reveal them in His time.

Blessings upon all of you. May each of us pray for those in need throughout the world. So many people and places are under such horrible bondage, persecution, and are in dire need of restoration. May we contribute to those causes through our gifts.

Love you So๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ™
