The one who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John

As we continue our journey through 1 John, we pick up at verse 15 of chapter 2.  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle John writes:

“Do not love the world or anything in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”  1 John 2: 15-17
The Apostle is using the word ‘world’ here as a synonym for the evil one he had just written about in the preceding verse.
The ‘world’ as a creation of God was made in beauty and love, and light.  It was made for mankind, and all other creation in it, to enjoy fellowship with God, and all that He Is.  The world John refers to here was captured by the evil one and transformed into a place of ugliness, and hate, and darkness. And as we look at the things John points out here, we see the things the evil one used to take the original world from mankind:   “Lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, pride and ego.”
John tells us if we walk in these things, the love of the Father is not in us.  That does not mean Father does not love us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” (John 3: 16-17 ) How great His love, and grace, and mercy is for us.
So John is saying we choose in this life as to whether to walk in the love and the will of the Father, or the ways of the fallen world.  We choose who to believe every day.
We choose to believe it is the will of the Father that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9), and has provided the Way through Christ Jesus because of His Love and Grace.  That it is the will of the Father that we love and fellowship with Him, and the Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, and the giver of life, Holy Spirit.   That it is the will of the Father that we love one another, and live life in His kingdom here on earth in the Holy Spirit above the ways of the fallen world.  That it is His desire that we know what is real, and will live forever, and what is a lie, and will pass away, and has given us His written Word to tell us His will.
We know the evil one can make the ways of the world look very enticing to mankind, and uses the world to try to take us from the will of God. But “let us walk by faith, and not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)  Faith in His love, and His will for us.  As we do, we shall live life abundantly here, and forever.
May we be greatly blessed, encouraged and comforted by the truth of the Word.
