“Whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son” 2 John

As we continue our study of 2 John, we pick up at verse 8.  The Apostle, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, writes:

“Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.  Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”  2 John 8-9
John had just written a warning to the flock about deceivers whom he called antichrists.  Teachers who had infiltrated the Church and were telling half truths about the Gospel, and about Christ Jesus.  They were saying that Jesus was a great Teacher, and a Prophet, but not really God incarnate.  They called themselves Christians, but were delivering a false message. These teachers  were also saying it was necessary to be circumcised, and necessary to keep certain laws and certain days to be in God’s will.
John was warning the children that believing these people was dangerous to the point of losing what they had worked for.  They had worked through the abuse hurled at them because they had accepted the grace of the gospel, and rejected the works of the law unto salvation.  Some had even been cut off from their families because of their faith in Christ Jesus; but they had been set free.  No doubt John was telling them to remember what Jesus taught when asked about “the works that God requires”?  Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”  (John 6:28-29)  Notice He was asked about works (plural), Jesus replied with work (singular).  There is only one thing required – “believe in the Son”.  Jesus has taken care of the rest of the work that was required by the law, and the old covenant.  He has given His blood to cleanse us of our unrighteousness.  He has given His righteousness to us.  We walk in His perfection in our spirit. To go back to keeping part of the law and saying that something is required beyond faith in Christ Jesus is walking away from grace, and the finished work Jesus has provided for us.  What a loss.
John said, “Continue in the teaching.” When we live in the teaching of Christ, that is: ‘Love one another’, we have the Father and the Son.  For God is love, (1 John 4:8) They are One in us.
May we never lose the reward of grace, and love because we are trying to do ‘work’ to please God.  May we never doubt that Jesus is Son of man, So of God. Able to fully understand where we are on our journey, and able to provide for our every need as we look to Him.  Able to fully deliver us from sin and death because He defeated both.  Able to make us righteous in Him because Father has declared it so.
Blessings and love upon you, and yours, God’s Beloveds.  May you prosper and be in good health as you continue in the teaching of Christ Jesus through your faith in Him.
