The Word says, “Do not repay evil with evil, or insult with insult, but on the contrary repay evil with blessing, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:9
All of us suffer injustices at times.. Our response to unfair treatment, though, should be carefully considered as we must address in our own hearts our willingness to obey the Biblical teaching, or not. In today’s world, it seems to be commonplace to see and to accept all the anger and harsh judgments over the differences between us. I read an article recently from the Sacramento Press that addressed this issue, pointing out how frightening it is at this time in history that it has become socially acceptable to publicly ridicule and humiliate those who not share our views, especially our political or religious views. Turn on the television news stations or radio talk shows almost daily, and listen to the ways we bully, mock, shame, and verbally abuse those with whom we disagree. We appear to be so caught up in our arguments, or disagreements, that we even seem to be enjoying the hatred being spewed out across this land.
Surprisingly enough, we always seem to be waiting around for the other person we disagree with to change. I think we would be better served though, if we prayed for the wisdom to conduct ourselves the way the Lord would want us to. Or maybe we could borrow the words of T.D. Jakes, a pastor from Dallas, and say, “Lord, change ME until it does not hurt anymore.
Yes, we are to show Christ in us to everyone, and that means even to the toxic people in our lives, whether they are believers or not. If we continue on as we are going now, we will realize, sadly enough, that, as Max Lucado points out, ” there is a dangerous point at which anger ceases to be an emotion and becomes a driving force.” That said, we should remind ourselves that our commitment to Christ is of supreme importance, and that commitment should inform our lives through all of our thoughts, words, and actions. We are called, after all, to extend His grace and mercy to others, remembering the grace and mercy God has extended to us. Here is the way the Lord says to do it:
“Do not repay evil with evil, or insult with insult, but on the contrary repay evil with blessing, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.”
