To ‘intercede’ means to “plead or make a request in behalf of another, to mediate; to intervene”, according to Webster.
In the Mosaic Covenant, when we sinned it was required that a Priest pray to God for us, and offer up a sacrifice for our sins. He served as intercessor. The Word tells us that Jesus Christ Himself is now our High Priest and Intercessor in this new Covenant of Grace. It is written in (Hebrews 7:24-28), “but because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent Priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them. Such a High Priest truly meets our needs – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself. For the Law appoints high priests men in all their weakness, but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.”
I am so thankful, and so grateful to live in the Covenant of Grace. To know that I am forgiven of all transgressions – past, present and future – because of the finished work of our High Priest, and King, Christ Jesus who now sits on the Throne of Grace beside, Most High. To know that when I have ‘blown it’, that He stands ready to receive me, talk to me about it, help me to see the right way, remind me of who I am, and tell me once again that He paid for that, and will intercede for me when the accuser comes to point it out to the Father. He gets me back on the right track, and assures me He is with me.
“In the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” (Romans 8:26,27).
