As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 35 of chapter One. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle wrote:
“The next day John (the Baptist) was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God!’ When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi (which means Teacher) where are you staying?’ ‘Come, He replied and you will see.’ So they went to where He was staying, and they spent the day with Him. It was about 4 in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is the Christ). (John 1: 35 – 41)
As we look at the words, and allow the Holy Spirit to open our hearts to them, we see the effects of personal testimony.
John the Baptist was a dynamic Preacher, and had many disciples following him. His goal however, was to point people to ‘Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away our sins’. He had been shown clearly who Jesus was, and wanted everyone to know that Jesus is the Messiah. So when Jesus walked by, John did not say, “Look, this ‘may be’ the Lamb of God.” He said, ‘Look THE Lamb of God.’ When John’s disciples heard this, and because they trusted what John had to say, they began to want to know more about this man. When they did, and began to ask questions, Jesus said, ‘Come and you will see.’
After they had spent time with Him, there was no question in their mind as to who He was. Andrew then immediately wanted his brother to ;come and see’ who they had found.
What a privilege to be able to tell the world about the love of God, and about this One He sent to personally tell us about His love, and to show us that love with His life. Let us invite others to ‘come and see’ as the door is opened for us to do so.
