As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 27 of Chapter 4. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:
“Just then His disciples returned and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want? or “Why are You talking with her?”
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their way toward Him. Meanwhile His disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” Then His disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought Him food?” “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.” (John 4: 27-34)
Jesus never missed an opportunity to teach. His disciples had gone to get food for themselves, and to bring Him some. It was no coincidence that He was left alone, and that this woman came to draw water at this particular time. He had already spoken about natural water, and the Living Water we do not see. Now He was using this opportunity to speak about natural food, and the food we do not see.
In these verses, we see the woman He had been speaking to become very excited about what He was telling her. He had said clearly to her, “I am the Messiah”. (John 4:25-26) He later cautioned His disciples about telling people that He was the Christ, (Matthew 16:20), but here without hesitation, He stated it. I believe it was to tell her, who was ‘living in sin’ that He came for all, and that His grace is for all. He came to Samaria to let it be known, that all Nations, not just the Jews, shall have the opportunity to receive Him, and be blessed by Him.
He used the food, just as He did so often with parables, to teach that while natural food is needed for our body, ‘doing the will of God’ is food for the soul, and the spirit.
Doing the will of the Father is for all to do. Finishing His work was for Christ alone to do. To do the will of God is to realize His great love for us, believe in the One He sent; (John 6:29) Love Him, and Love one another, as we love ourselves.
Christ finished the work of deliverance of God’s children from sin at the cross. His last words were: “It is finished.” (John 19:30)
Doing the will of the Father nourished, and fulfilled the Son of Man, the Son of God, the Christ, the Messiah. So it is for us
