“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.” John 4:19

As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we pick up at verse 15 of Chapter 4.  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:

“The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’  He told her, ‘Go call your husband and come back.’    ‘I have no husband,’ she replied.
Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband.  The fact is you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.  What you have just said is quite true.’
‘Sir’, the woman said, ‘I can see that you are a prophet.’ ”  John 4: 15-19
Last week we saw where Jesus had intentionally gone to an ancient well in Samaria at a specific time to meet with a specific Samaritan woman to give her a message to be delivered to that part of the world. He had asked her for a drink to start a conversation about living water.
After some conversation, the Lord speaks to her of the Living Water that comes through Him. He had said unto her, “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”  (4:14) Her reply was, “Give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”  She missed His words about eternal life.  She was just concerned about the moment, and the physical part.  Perhaps no one had ever talked to her about eternal life.
But the Lord started moving her into the area He wanted her to go when He asked her to call her husband.  When she told Him she had no husband, He confirmed that fact and told her all about her past life including the fact the man she currently lived with was not her husband.  He used this fact to get her attention.  He got it.  She immediately recognized the fact He was more than just a man wanting a drink of water, and because she perceived that He was a Prophet, she moved into a discussion about where to go to worship.  Maybe it was to get the subject off of her, but the Lord used the opportunity as always.
So many of God’s children have never been told about eternal life.  They have no idea what that means, or how to have it.  They are just living for the moment, and the physical part of life.  But the Father loves them, and wants them to have what He has made possible for them through His Son, Christ Jesus.  The Woman at the well began to see Jesus in a different light as they talked.  May it be so for us who are His Ambassadors. (2 Corinthians 5:20)   As we talk to others, may they see us in a different light and in a different way from other people representing something they may be missing.  Something that they want, and need. This is all in His hands, and in His time, but if the Lord has prepared them, and wants one of His children to tell  the other of His love for them, He probably has called us to do so.
New Testament Prophets are called to tell of what has happened, and what is to happen based upon the written Word.  May others look at us and say, “I can see that you are a prophet.”(1 Corinthians 14:1)
May we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be glory both now and forever.  Amen.  (2 Peter 3:18)   You are greatly loved, and highly blessed.
