To be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Proverbs

” A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”  Proverbs 22: 1

Webster defines esteem – “to value highly; respect, to have a favorable opinion”.
Please allow me to use myself as an example of  my point.  When I was born, my family named me Carroll Ottis.  It was after my Dad, William Carroll, and a favorite Uncle of my Mom/s.  I did not like the name Carroll, because I thought it sounded like a girl’s name, and I did not know what Carroll meant,, or where it came from.  I refused to be called that  when I left home, and asked everyone to call me C.O.  Later, my Team gave me the name ‘Coach’, then ‘Poppa’because they knew I cared, and was there for them.  Then the Lord gave me the name of Barnabas, ‘Son of Encouragement’ – thus Poppa B., when I sign off.  It was only in later years in a trip to Ireland  that I found that Carroll means ‘strong in faith and war’.  It is a family name, like Pete Carroll, and it was brought to America as my ancestors migrated here.  In my ancestor search, I found it was given to many of the male members of the family.  So it has taken on a new meaning and value to me.  My children call me Dad, Daddy,, Pop, Poppa.  My Grandson calls me Pap, Pappy, (Push Over).  We all have many names.  Some we like – some we do not care for – but they identify who we are.
When I was born again, I was given the name ‘Christian’.  As a young Christian I did not realize the significance of that name.   Too often I would not remember what that name cost, and what it truly meant.   I so often did things that were not in keeping with it, and thus cause someone to say, “Christian?”   Unfortunately, that still happens today.
However, it is my prayer, and my sincere desire to live up to that name in body, soul, and spirit.  In every way of life.   He is beyond worthy of my esteem for Him.
I pray that my life will show what He said: “Love one another.”  I pray that all of us who wear the name of ‘Christian’ will realize who we truly are, and what He gives us in power and love and self control to represent  the Family.  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –  Brothers and Sisters. To be esteemed because of what we give to the world.  Love, support, encouragement, comfort, strength, joy, and what is right.
How blessed I am to be able to share the Love of God with you, my Brothers and Sisters.
May you prosper and be in perfect health, even as your soul prospers.
Blessings upon you, and yours, God’s Beloveds.
Poppa B.
