“Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended. He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend.”
Proverbs 22: 10-11
For most of us, when we read this statement about driving out a Mocker, we think in terms of someone else. Certainly we can have people in our lives that are mockers – those who always have the worst thing to say about an issue, or about someone, or “I will tell you what is wrong with that” attitude. And while we may not always be able to remove them from our lives, we are wise to keep their words and actions at arms length. Love them, and pray for them, and try to help them as we can, but do not let them be a hindrance to living in the kingdom. They may be in our life, but they do not have to be in our head.
Just as important for us, and perhaps more important, is to not allow ourselves to become mockers. One who allows ourselves to become judgmental; and think thoughts of ridicule, and scoff at what others say and do. We may or may not say these things outwardly, but they will have serious impact on our attitudes and peace in our heart. We must deal with those kinds of thoughts. We must capture them, and cast them, drive them out of our mind. They are not of Christ.
Paul said, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 The Lord has given us divine power to do just that. 2 Corinthians 10:4.
When our thinking is right, when we “have our head on straight” as the expression goes, we will not live in strife, or always be quarreling, or thinking or even making insults. When our thoughts are obedient to Christ Jesus, we will deal with people and issues as He does. We will find our heart is pure toward the person or issue because His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, is leading, and will show us the right things to say and do. We will find our speech to be gracious, and as it is written, we “will have the king as our friend”.
We will be in constant fellowship with Him, and His Way.
“The Lord bless you, and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you, and give you peace.” Numbers 6: 24-27. Amen.
