Tomorrow we celebrate the genesis of what has become perhaps the greatest Nation in the history of mankind. We celebrate the day our Forefathers signed a “Declaration of Independence”, and said, “We declare ourselves to be free from the yoke of an oppressive government, and declared, “In God we trust.” Because of that trust, God has indeed blessed America.
In Jeremiah we read: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. He has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:5-7
The contrast this great Prophet of the Lord made, stands true today, and every day. To trust in man, that is looking to man, ( the government, or a company or self) rather than trusting God to guide us, and provide for us will lead us to parched places. As we celebrate our freedom in this great and wonderful nation, let us take the opportunity to do a ‘self check’. Are we indeed trusting in the Lord to guide us, and meet our every need each day? Have we unintentionally let our heart turn away from the Lord and turn to man and we did not realize it? Have we come to depend on flesh for our strength? Hopefully not, but this is a great time to affirm our Way.
Regardless of the great trumpeting of separation of church and state, this nation was founded upon Christ and His Word. John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, said: “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” While that statement is no longer true for many, and while the principles have been distorted and destroyed by many, the true principle of Christianity remains. It is, “In God we trust”.
Let us pledge allegiance to, and trust with all of our heart, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
