“As we continue our walk through the Epistle 1 John, we pick up at verse 12 of chapter 2. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:
“I write to you, dear children, because our sins have been forgiven on account of His name.” 1 John 2: 12.
John wrote to us to let us know we have been set free of sin debt if we choose to accept that truth.
My Dad was a Sharecropper. He worked the Farm land that belonged to someone else, and for a period of time gave half of his harvest to the owner of the land. Things got better for him later, but when he could only keep half of what he made to provide for his family he was always in debt. He would have to borrow money, and charge the grocery needs to live through the Winter when there was no work. But as soon as the crops were sold in the Fall, he took half of what he had earned and gave it to the land owner, and then went immediately to the Bank, and the Grocery Store to pay what he owed. Winter of course comes after Fall, and many times he had to repeat the cycle – back into debt because there was no cash left.
The good news was, he could borrow and charge on his name. He owned nothing, so there was nothing but his name to put up for collateral. And, since he had a ‘good name’ because he always paid his debts, and had earned that good name. His name was trustworthy. There was never a question when he needed something. He could say, “Put it on my account”, and it was done.
So it is for the spiritual debts we owe. If we have asked Jesus into our heart, He puts His ‘good name’ up for collateral when He intercedes for us to the Father when we miss the mark, or when we do not live up to who we really are in Christ Jesus. He says, “Father, I know he was wrong, and I will work with him to grow above that, but I have paid for that – ‘Put it on my account’. – and it is done. He will point out where we need to confess and correct. He will show us the right way. He will deal with us in His love to help us grow above that which was wrong. The Good News is “Our sins are forgiven on account of His name.”
The Word tells us: “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place, and gave Him the name that is above every name;” (Philippians 2:9). We know Him as Jesus. As we go to the Word, and as we see in other languages, He is known by the many names He has earned, or by the name of who the name ‘Jesus’ translates into, but on account of His name, or the name that it translates into, we are free from the debt of sin when we give it to Him, and allow Him to say, “Put it on my account”. He is trustworthy. He has earned our trust and faith.
