“Do not wear yourself out to get rich.” Proverbs 23

As we come to the next chapter of Proverbs, we find these words of wisdom, and words of life, inspired by the Holy Spirit:

“Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.  Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.”  Proverbs 23: 4-5
Providing for our Family, and having savings set aside for other needs is the financial goal and desire for most family providers.  The Lord gives us wisdom to do so. Using good judgment, and seeking good advice to make safe investments, if we have the money to do so, is wise.  If we work for a good company that provides a 401 K or something that will provide a match on savings; it is wise take advantage of that as much as possible.  Living within our means, and only being in debt for a house or vehicle is also wise. Making sure that part of our income is given to the Lord to help others, and support His work should be a top line on our budget.
All of these things are basic, and if we put them in place we should be able to serve the Lord,  financially take care of our families, and touch other lives in a positive way.
The Word, the Light of our path, tells us however not to focus on getting rich.  Doors may be opened, and opportunities may come that will create wealth beyond our wildest dreams; be open to that and do not be surprised when it happens, but we are not to chase riches.  We must look to the Lord to open those doors and opportunities.  We must trust Him, and not wear ourselves out running after something that is a temporary thing.  We can get so consumed on making more money that our Families can be neglected, our ideals can be compromised, and we find ourselves focused more on getting riches than on living a live of love and happiness. It can become a priority that takes first place if we let it. Priority even over time in the Word and with the Lord.
As the Word says: “Have the wisdom to show restraint.”
There is nothing wrong with being rich, and if we do become rich we can do much good with it if we keep it in perspective.  As Paul wrote to Timothy: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous, and willing to share.  In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age; so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” ( 1 Timothy 6:17-19)
True life is looking to God, who is Love.  He breathed life into us and made us to be like Him. We too are Love and can only truly be happy when we receive it from Him, and give ourselves to it.  We are to grow in it, be blessed in it, touch others in it, relax in it, enjoy it, and not wear ourselves out in ways that will pull us away from it.
You are greatly blessed, highly favored, and deeply loved, my Friends.  You are rich indeed – abundance given to us in grace.  We do not have to wear ourselves out trying to obtain it. Christ Jesus paid the price for it, and Abba, Father gives it to us in Love.
