“The Blood testifies that Jesus is the Son of God” 1 John 5

As we continue our walk through the Epistle of 1 John, we pick back up at verse 5 of Chapter 5.  Writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle writes:

“Who is it that overcomes the world?  Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. This is the One who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ.  He did not come by water only, but by water and blood.  And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.  For there are three that testify; the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three are in agreement.”  1 John 5: 5-8
In order for something to be accepted as a fact in the day this was written, the law of the land stated there must be two or three witnesses to testify.  The testimony of one only was not sufficient.  John is saying there are three that testify that Jesus is the Son of God, and the three he listed were not from the mouths of mortal men.  Last week we examined how the water of Jesus’ baptism testified, as Father God Himself declared Jesus to be His Son when Jesus came up out of the baptismal water.. (Matthew 4: 16,17)  This week we will look ever so briefly at the testimony of the blood.
Blood is life – no human or animal can survive without it.  We must have blood, but it must be the right blood.  For God’s own reason, He chose to make different types of blood, and they cannot be mixed without consequence.  My wife’s Dad was given the wrong type of blood during an operation many years ago, and he died.  But the blood of Christ Jesus is for all.  He tells us in the Gospel of John, “Whoever eats My flesh, and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise Him up at the last day.  For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.  Whoever eats My flesh, and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.”  (John 6: 53-56)  Later at the Last Supper Jesus took His cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for the many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26: 27,28)  The blood of Jesus sealed the new covenant of grace, and mercy for God’s children.  It fulfilled the will of the Father as spoken by Christ when He said, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up the last day.”  (John 6:40)
As Jesus speaks of His blood, and all that it does for mankind,  His blood testifies that He is the Son of God sent to us from the love of the Father.
May you be blessed in all good things, God’s Beloveds.  May each of us see ourselves cleaned and purified by the blood of the Lamb through the power of the Holy Spirit within.  May we walk in victory as we stand on His Word that says, “They overcame the accuser by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony.” (Rev 12: 11)  Amen.
