“Do whatever He tells you.” John 2:5

“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.  Jesus Mother was there, and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone , Jesus’ Mother said to Him, ‘They have no more wine.’  ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’  His Mother told the servants, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.  Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim.  Then He told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.  He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.  Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you saved the best till now.’

What Jesus did here in Cana was the first of the signs through which He revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.” (John 2: 1-11)

As we study the Word, we see that every thing Jesus did as He walked on earth as a man, was for a purpose.

Here we see Him taking the time to go to a wedding which endorsed supporting the social need of a Friend.  Tradition says His earthly Dad Joseph was no longer alive at this point, and so we see Him escorting His Mother to the event to care for her as a good son would. His current disciples were with Him for a purpose which was to be revealed.  When we are one with the Lord, He directs our steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

From His comment, it appears Jesus was reluctant to get involved with coming up with more wine for the party, but since His Mother knew what He could do, and she asked Him to, He took care of the need.  And while He was at it, He performed His first public miracle for confirmation to His disciples they had put their trust in the right person to follow.

When we have a need, go to the Lord and talk to Him about it. Listen to what He tells you through His still voice of peace within you, or through circumstances, or through a word from the Word, or through a word spoken by someone you trust is one with the Lord, and then do whatever He tells you. He will meet that need in His time, and in His way.  Let us put our faith, and our trust in that truth.
